The Revolutionists (Assistant Design)

The Revolutionists chronicles a portion of the life of Olympe de Gouges, a French playwright, during the times of the French Revolution. She and the other characters are fighting an uphill battle against oppression by men. As such, we wanted the lighting to be very crisp with strong back light and side light to convey a sense of isolation.

Here we see Olympe de Gouges alone in her study before her execution. We used a window gobo to set the scene of the study. The contrast between the warm side light and cold white back light conveys the isolation which she felt.

We used 3" Fresnels and microPARs as up-lights on the columns of the set, which emanate being in a large, cold cavern.
