In this production, we used a combination of live acoustic instruments, including guitar, ukulele, and cello, and recorded underscoring. This presented us with the challenge of finding appropriate underscoring music to blend in with the live instruments. I chose this song, "Hard Times," to underscore the moment when Edward Tulane is huddled with Bull, Lucy, and the hobos around a campfire as I felt it captured the feeling of the characters' situations.
To allow for a more seamless blending between live and recorded sounds, I chose to utilize two speakers on the stage deck, hidden under the set.
For the scene in which Edward is being repaired by a doll mender after being smashed into pieces, I chose to use Luigi Attademo's "La Despedida," Fantasie no. 6, op. 21. Although this song does fit the instrumentation of the show quite well, it is rather different than the acoustic Americana and Folk music used in the rest of the show. We wanted this scene to have a very different feeling than the rest of the show; it needed almost a mystical feel to it, which we accomplished in part by using this song.
